I'm dabbling with a couple of ideas for the position paper. The one I'm pretty sure I will go with is - should the government require marriage counseling prior to marriage, as well as prior to divorce? I'm leaning toward this because I feel that the government SHOULD take a more active role in helping preserve marriage. I learned in my psychology class that people report higher levels of happiness when in a marriage, and happier people are generally more productive. With nearly 50% divorce rates for 1st marriages, and higher rates for subsequent marriages, marriage is in a serious crisis.
Some other subjects I'm looking into are universal healthcare, and animal over-population. I'm in favor of universal healthcare, and I would write about the benefits of having it be universal vs. private insurance company like it is now. Concerning animal over-population - I would propose some ideas that could potentially stop the stray problem we have for the future, as well as over-population of our shelters. The fourth idea I am considering is adoption rights for gay couples, and why it is not harmful for children to grow up with gay parents.

I found your topic on the government stepping in to require marriage counseling prior to marriage and before divorce interesting. Isn't this a role reserved for churches today? Separation of church and state? Some may think this is crossing the line and that the government shouldn't interfere in whether or not two individuals meet the requirements to get married or divorced. I’m interested to see how you develop your position paper on this, if that’s what you choose to go with.
