I have decided to do my position paper on lowering the hype around alcohol in America. I believe that the hype created around alcohol hurts the young people of America, and by lower the age, the hype surrounding this substance would take a downturn, and therefore lower the number of drunk driving accidents.
For example: In Europe, the general legal age for drinking is 18. There are a great number less drunk driving accidents in Europe as compared to America. Also, there are health benefits for drinking alcohol in moderate amounts.
My position on this issue is that the legal drinking age should be lowered.

  1. Where did you get that the drinking age in Europe was 18? In Western Europe it is usually 16, sometimes 17, and that's only to get alcohol from bars. You can buy it at the grocery store anyway because it's absolutely not enforced, and parents will usually have no problem with giving you a glass of wine at dinner or a cold beer while watching a soccer game. It's no big deal. And it's not that cool. And we can't drive until we're 18 (and it's really, really hard and expensive to get your driver's license), so by then we are rather aware of what alcohol does to us and most of us have actually had enough hangovers to be "over" the whole drinking too much thing.
