Blog 6 - Medicating children

For my third paper, I was originally thinking about writing about the effect of divorce on children... but I have decided instead to write about the effect of medicating children for psychological disorders such as ADHD. I've been against medicating children for psychological disorders for years. My now ex boyfriend was put into special education and on Ritalin for ADHD by his mother, who simply could not hand his boundless energy. When he turned 18, he chose to stop taking his medication. I was with him both before and after the medication, and I truly feel that he was a more realistic version of himself afterwards. There is no shortage of articles on the internet on this topic, and there is actual medical evidence to support or refute my opinion, as well as my own experiences with children who have been medicated. I think this will be a much easier and more concrete topic to write on than the effect of divorce on children.

  1. Erin, I agree that as a society we are quick to medicate children that won't behave as we think they should. A lot of times, this medicating for disorders, such as ADHD, is done when the children are very young and before any other behavioral therapies are tried. I agree with your position and hope you've signed up for the workshop so I can read more about it. Natasha

  2. Thank you, Natasha. It's a very important position for me and my loved ones. My mother wanted to medicate me for ADHD when I was a child, and I am incredibly glad that she didn't. I plan on volunteering for the workshop, and I look forward to your comments!
